Leading Like Moses

I've always been fascinated by the story of the Pied Piper. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all it took to get people to follow you is a musical pipe and some basic music skills. People are looking for a leader they can follow. Our society is looking for a dream they can buy-into! Where are the leaders in our church? Often I see people filling positions without the skills to lead. People can't follow someone that isn't leading. I'm convinced the lack of leadership skills in children's ministry is one of the major reasons we have problems getting the help we need.

Leadership is influence. Leadership skills don't come natural, they are developed.  You can develop the skills necessary for becoming an effective leader. Invest in yourself. Listen to good tapes and read great books. History is filled with amazing role models that blazed a trail for today's leader. Moses is one of my personal favorites. I was asked to do a workshop on leadership and began studying Moses. As I began to study, it exploded in my spirit. Moses led 3 million Israelites across a burning desert to the Promised Land. Moses is the ultimate example of leadership. From the principals God taught Moses you will learn how to:

  • Find and fulfill God's dream for your life.

  • Understand the process God uses to build leaders.

  • Develop your influence.

  • Develop stronger leadership skills.

  • Realize your dreams through building others.

CD 1:Dream God’s Dream

Click here to hear Dream God's Dream CD

There is a drastic difference between dreaming a dream and dreaming God’s dream for your life. We look at Moses and how he discovered the Divine Destiny for his life and how  he fulfilled that Divine Destiny. This tape will  inspire you to find your Divine Destiny and develop the talents God has placed in seed form in your life.

 CD2: Building a Leader

All dreams must go through a death, burial and resurrection process. This process builds a leader. Many people think Moses years on the back side of the dessert where forgotten years, but after this tape you’ll understand more clearer how vital those years were to building the leader God could use. This tape will help you understand the process God is taking you through to develop you into the leader He wants you to be.

 CD 3: Follow the Leader

We are often tempted to say “He was a born leader” but there was much more to leadership than talent. In this tape you'll learn some necessary leadership skills that God taught Moses in the wilderness. Skills that you can develop and hone in every area of your life.

 CD 4: Mentoring Your Joshua

Joshua was the leader that took possession of the promised land. We get so excited about raising a generation that will take possession of the Land God has promised us. I am convinced God wants children's leaders to raise up a "Joshua Generation" but Joshua’s don’t  just happen. Joshua had a Moses that mentored him. Moses reproduced himself in Joshua!

I see so many children's leaders running around, frantically trying to do everything themselves. Big mistake. Maybe you're thinking, I'd love to have some help, but nobody wants to help. While I understand your dilemma, it begins with mentoring your Joshua. You’ll learn how to reproduce yourself in others like Moses did Joshua. This inspirational teaching will give you practical insight on becoming the mentor you need to be!

Follow the Leader

Below you will find some brief comments from the tape Follow the Leader.

Moses was politically powerful, educated, self-confident, and wealthy, but the Hebrews didn’t follow him because of any of those reasons. If those admirable attributes were enough to make a leader, then when Moses tried to stop a fight between two Hebrews why did one ask? "Who made you my boss?" Leadership is more than position, or knowledge. John Maxwell says "Leadership is influence."

There is no shortage of leaders, but there is a drastic shortage of the right kind of leaders. Where are today’s Pied Pipers that will play heaven’s song with such an anointing that the children of this generation will follow? Where are the Moses of this generation?

Today’s Moses, just like Israel’s Moses, must be sent by God. I am thankful to report that every born again believer has been sent by God. We all have different fields of service, none greater or lesser, just different. Matthew 28:19 (KJV)   Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. You have been called to be a deliverer. You have been called to deliver the good news that will set people free from a slavery crueler than Egypt—sin. God wants to use you right where you are and who you are.

Moses said, "Who am I". This attitude was vital to his success as a leader, because then God could reply, "Moses, I’ll go with you". When we think we can do it, we go alone. When we realize our dependence on Him, then we tap into the source of all we need. God never intended for you to do it without Him. His divine plan is to build faith and a dependence on Almighty God. You are a clay pot for God to pour His living water into that will bring life to a barren field.

Moses continued, "God I can’t." God replied, "What is in your hand?" Take inventory of your talents? Be honest. Talent is God’s gift to you: developing and using that talent is your gift back to God. God  is a wise investor. He will not continue to invest talents in you, if you do not use them.

Because I love to speak, I am constantly reading books that will sharpen and improve my speaking skills, even though I have been involved in ministry 30 years. I study hard and pray diligently because I recognize my dependency on God.

Sometimes we use excuses, "God I’m not educated or I don’t have a position. I’m just a helper."  Leadership requires ability,  skill and character, but does not require a formal education or position.

Such was the case of Isaac Bassette. He took his place in the Senate in 1831, not as a senator, but as a page. Because he worked as a page and then a messenger he missed a formal education. He was promoted to assistant doorkeeper and then doorkeeper of the Senate.

For 64 years Isaac Bassette served in the Senate. Senators valued his opinion and asked for his advice because they knew he was a wise man. Did he have position? No, he only served as a doorkeeper. He seized the opportunity of listening and learning everything he could and he became wise. Never stop learning. Be an ardent reader. Take advantage of the library. Pray for creative ideas. Surround yourself with winners and wise people.

But why did they follow Moses?

1.  He was sent by God. Every dream has a timing and a location. Moses was God’s man arriving at God’s time. And God has a time and place for your divine destiny. Moses spent 40 years on the back side of the desert getting ready. Don’t despise the preparation. You won’t be ready if you don’t seize the opportunities along the way.

2. The people could identify with him. He was a Hebrew with parents that were slaves. He met the people where they were instead of trying to lead from where he wanted them to be. It’s important that you don’t put yourself on a pedestal where you are no longer a person the people can identify with.

3. Moses was there to serve. Always seek to serve, not to be served. Some people want to be a leader because they want people to follow them. They want to be important.

4. Moses was passionate about his purpose. Purpose gives you direction. Often leaders try to lead with purpose and without passion. Mother Teresa was a woman of incredible influence because she was passionate about her purpose. When we get passionate about leading others to Jesus we will do it.

5. Moses had vision. "A leader is one who sees more than others see, who sees farther than others see, and who sees before others do." –Leroy Eims

6. Moses was a man of integrity.  "Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without strategy." –General Norman Schwarzkopf .
