We use a horse puppet in our Round Up the Sin Gang children's church curriculum. We call him Horace the hoarse horse. He stutters on all his "h's" as he teaches the class the memory verse.

When we use a full-bodied puppet like this behind the stage we wear a black sleeve or a black sock with the toe cut out (so your arm is covered, but the hand is uncovered for easier manipulation). The black seems to visually disappear after a few seconds on the stage.
