Harvest Object Lesson

Use this object lesson to help your students realize that their actions produce a harvest. Encourage them to plant godly actions to reap a good harvest.

Bring a pretty bowl of red and yellow apples, and a pumpkin into class. Often you will find them on sale after October 31. (Show the apple.) Do you like the fall season? Do you enjoy the cool, crisp air and all the beautiful colors? The fiery reds, the golden yellows and oranges that set the skyline ablaze are glorious. Do you enjoy crunching on apples or licking the topping off hot pumpkin pie? Or what about peanuts? Do you like to roast them in the oven or eat them boiled?

Harvest time is wonderful only because the farmer plants the seed before the harvest. Imagine with me that the farmer didn’t plant the pumpkin seeds or the peanuts. What would happen at harvest time? You’re right-- nothing. There would be nothing to harvest, because the farmer didn’t plant anything. Every year I wish I had pumpkins and gourds to enjoy this time of year, but I don’t have them, because I didn’t plant them.

There’s a law of nature in operation here, “You reap what you sow.” If you don’t plant, you won’t reap. Right? If the farmer doesn’t plant and care for the seed, he will not have a harvest. Even if he has wonderful dreams of trucks loaded with ripe pumpkins on their way to the market, he won’t have any. The harvest starts with planting.

Are you planting for a harvest? The farmer has faith that if he plants, he will receive a harvest. Are you planting by giving your offerings to God? Are you planting kindness even when it is difficult?

More laws of sowing and reaping.

1.      Give if you expect to receive.

2.      Witness if you want to win souls.

3.      Obey God’s Word if you want to receive His promises.

4.      If you want kindness, be kind.

5.      Love if you want to be loved.
