Fireman
and Sniffy:
(enters jumping on Fred excitedly)
Fireman Fred: Calm down boy! I didn’t forget to introduce you. Boys and girls let me
introduce you to my dog…
Sniffy: (howls)
Fireman Fred: You’re right, Sniffy. I want to introduce you to my helper, my
assistant, Sniffy. Sniffy doesn’t like it when I call him my dog.
Sniffy: (howls)
Fireman Fred: See what I mean. He really is my helper. He can smell smoke a mile away.
Sniffy:(Barks)
Fireman Fred: That’s just an expression, Sniffy.
I don’t expect you to smell smoke a mile away.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: No, you don’t smell smoke now.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: He’s sure he smells smoke. No, Sniffy, it must be my jacket. I wore it
to a fire this week.
>Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Yes, I’m sure, but that brings up a very good question. If you see or
smell smoke really strong, what should you do?
Sniffy: (hides under his paws)
Fireman Fred: You know better than that. Never hide or just pretend it will go away.
Fireman Fred: That’s more like it.Smelling
smoke is something to howl about! Fires can burn very fast so it is important
that you move quickly and safely to get out of danger.
Fireman Fred: Sniffy wants me to tell you to never ever, ever …
Sniffy:(howls)
Fireman Fred: Well, are you going to let me tell them or not?
Sniffy:(nods his head)
Fireman Fred: Don’t ever, ever, ever, ever …. Is that enough evers?
Sniffy: (nods)
Fireman Fred: Don’t ever play with matches or lighters or candles or any kind of fire.
Children start over 100,000 fires ever year. Many children are killed or
terribly burned by these fires. If you don’t play with matches then you
can’t start a fire.
Sniffy: (cries) Fireman
Fred: I know how you feel, Sniffy. It is so sad to think about children being
hurt so horribly and even killed when it doesn’t have to happen.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Tell them again. But I just told them not to play with fire.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: I know they need to realize fire is serious stuff, but I just ….
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: All right. All right. Kids, Sniffy says for me to tell you again. Don’t
ever play with matches or candles or lighters or fire of any kind.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Sparklers….of course, how could I forget sparklers? Even sparklers can
catch your clothes on fire. It’s important to never play with sparklers unless
an adult has given you permission and is nearby watching.
Sniffy: (howls)
Fireman Fred: What are you howling about now?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: That’s right. People can get horrible burns when their clothes catch
fire.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Tell them what to do. You want to play “Sniffy Says” now? OK Sniffy
wants to give you some Fire Safety rules to always remember. Sniffy will you
tell the boys and girls the first rule?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: What? That’s not the rule!
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: OK. OK I’ll tell them. Don’t put your pet frog in the mashed potatoes!
That’s a good rule to stay out of trouble but we want the first Fire Safety
rule. So please tell the boys and girls the real rule.
Sniffy: (barks as he holds up his hand like a traffic cop)
Fireman Fred: (singing) “Stop in the name of love…”
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: OK! Just because I can’t sing so well is no reason for you to insult me.
Sorry kids, I got a little carried away there. Now what was I saying?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: That’s right. If for some reason an accident happened and your clothes
caught fire. “Stop.”
Sniffy: (barks and puts his hand up like a traffic cop)
Fireman Fred: that’s what I said, “STOP!” Sometimes folks panic and start running.
Sniffy: (howls and shakes his head)
Fireman Fred: That’s the worst thing you can do. Fire has to have oxygen to burn. If
you run you are supplying the fire with lots of oxygen and you don’t want to
do that.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: I almost forgot. This is “Sniffy Says” time. I want you to do what you
see Sniffy doing and say “Stop.”
Sniffy: (barks and puts his hand up like a traffic cop)
Fred: No, Sniffy. I’m not going to ask them to bark.
Sniffy: (barks and puts his hand up like a traffic cop)
Fireman Fred: No, they don’t.
Sniffy:(barks and puts his hand up like a traffic cop)
Fireman Fred: No, they don’t.
Sniffy:(barks and puts his hand up like a traffic cop)
Fireman Fred: Kids you don’t have to bark like Sniffy. Just hold your hand up like a
traffic policeman does when he’s trying to stop traffic and say “Stop”.
Sniffy would you please tell them Rule Number 2?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Come on be a good sport.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Sniffy, please!
Sniffy: (barks)
Firemand Fred: We have some friends that want to share a special song that
will help you remember all the rules to stay safe in case of a fire. (Stop Drop
& Roll on Safety Rock CD)
Sniffy: (drops out of sight. If you’re holding the puppets on your lap, you can let
Sniffy drop to the floor.)
Sniffy: (Come back and barks)
Fireman Fred: Why did you do that?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Oh, that is the second rule. Drop. And this is the “Sniffy Says Game”
so everyone let’s say it together “Drop.”
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Oh, that’s right we’re supposed to do what you do too!
Sniffy: (bark sand drops over in his lap or over the stage)
Fireman Fred: OK. Because we don’t have enough room, you can drop your head in your
lap if you want. Are you ready? Let’s say it together, “Drop.” All right
Sniffy, we have two rules: Stop, Drop and now for the next rule.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fred: Oh no. This is not good, Sniffy.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Yes, I know that is the rule, but the kids can’t do that here.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: No, they can’t.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: No, they can’t.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: OK, they can roll their eyes.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Sure they can roll their eyes. They roll their eyes every time their mom
asks them to clean their room.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: OK, they can roll their heads.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: OK, what about their hands. Can they roll their hands?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Sparky says, “Roll.” But since there is no room to roll on the ground
you can just roll your hands.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: I’m glad you like to roll on the ground, but I don’t like to roll on
the ground.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Oh, it scratches your flea bites. That’s good, but I don’t have fleas.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: No, I haven’t checked, but we were telling the boys and girls the Fire
Safety rules. OK boys and girls,
let’s say it together, (extend your arms straight out and then roll them back
and forth) “Roll.”
Sniffy:(moves over to check out Freeman’s hair)
Fireman Fred: What are you doing now?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: No. I already told you I don’t have fleas.
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: I’m positive you didn’t get them from me. Can you tell the boys and
girls goodbye?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Sure I’ll remind them one more time. Boys and girls it’s really
important that you understand matches are not a toy. They are tools. So never
ever, ever, ever play with matches. Now can you say good bye?
Sniffy: (barks)
Fireman Fred: Bye kids!
