Teaching with Felts

Maybe you’ve heard “I don’t use felts because they are too old fashioned” But I believe, they are so old fashioned they are new to this generation. The way the visuals are used is the key to bringing them into the twentieth century.

Felts work because they are colorful. The bright colors grab their attention.

 Things to remember

F Build the presentation in front of the children, don’t just show it.

F Organize your visuals so the first visuals you need is on the top and the last visuals is on the bottom.

F Have a table nearby or a tray attached to your easel so you can place the felts nearby the board

F Use good story telling skills.

F Be dramatic

F Use fun voices

F Have a message. What life application can be made from this

F Involve the class by having them make an animal sound or a fun sound every time you mention that animal or word

F Use the board as a drama stage

F Move the figures across the board like you would play figures or rod puppets

F Watch the children play with their play figures to get ideas

F Use felts to illustrate fun songs or songs that teach

F Use the dramatized Bible, or your favorite storytelling tapes

F Use the felts under black light

1.     Play the story from the dramatized Bible while moving the figures as the story progresses.

2.     Use the figures to Illustrate a story. Two of my favorites are off the Jodi Benson Tape. Let the Children Come uses the figures from the Bible set. And Creation Story uses Creation Circles.

3.     Use gloves to move the visuals for a novelty effect.

4.     If you can not darken your room cover a table with a sheet and do the story under the table using the black light.

5.     Visualize stories such as 3 little pigs, fairy tales, little red hen, human body. Children of the world
